ASC Z80 Spring Meeting Concludes with Collaboration on Optical Standards Development

Alexandria, VA – April 15, 2025 – From April 6-8, professionals across the optical industry gathered in Clearwater, Florida, for the Accredited Standards Committee for Ophthalmic Optics (ASC) Z80 spring meeting. ASC Z80 is the only entity accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop national standards in the ophthalmic optics field. 

The Vision Council has proudly served as the Secretariat for ASC Z80 since 2011, playing a vital role in the creation, administration, and advancement of all national standards developed by the committee. Representatives from The Vision Council were present during this recent meeting, including voting representative Michael Vitale, Vice President of Membership, Government Relations and Technical Affairs. The Vision Council’s continued leadership and engagement within the committee is a testament to the organization’s longstanding dedication to developing and maintaining quality standards within the optical industry.

As an accredited standards committee operating under ANSI, ASC Z80 establishes and updates more than 20 standards that support ophthalmic devices, equipment and optical products. Members from across the ophthalmic optics community participated in the multi-day sessions, contributing their technical expertise and industry insights across a broad range of topics including sunglasses, frames, contact lenses, medical ophthalmic devices and instruments.

  • Subcommittee SC3 – Frames
  • Subcommittee SC4 – Medical Ophthalmic Devices
  • Subcommittee SC6 – Ophthalmic Instruments and Low Vision Devices
  • Subcommittee SC7 – Contact Lenses
