Report Methodology
This report is based on two nationally conducted surveys:
Eyecare Provider Survey: Conducted between Dec 17, 2024, and Jan 10, 2025, among 140 eyecare providers from The Vision Council’s Research Advisory Panel.
Consumer Survey: Conducted Dec 13–19, 2024, with a nationally representative sample of 1,500 U.S. adults. The survey stratified respondents by plan type: 53% with employer-sponsored plans, 15% with individual plans, and 16% each for Medicare and Medicaid.
Both surveys offer statistically significant insights with margins of error of ±7% (providers) and ±2.5% (consumers), enabling credible comparisons across demographics and plan types.
Key Findings
Satisfaction and Loyalty
Overall satisfaction grew across all plan types between 2023 and 2024. Individual plans led with a 13-point increase in satisfaction, followed by Medicare and Medicaid.
Net Promoter Score (NPS)—a measure of consumer willingness to recommend their plan—saw substantial gains for individual, Medicaid, and Medicare plans.
Consumers with high confidence in their benefit understanding reported dramatically higher satisfaction and NPS.
Coverage
The majority of eyecare providers accept some form of managed vision care, primarily to increase practice visibility, attract new patients, and serve those who otherwise could not afford eyecare services.
Eight out of ten providers report accepting EyeMed and VSP, making them the most commonly accepted plans for both Medicare and private payor plans.
Why It Matters
This report is vital for insurance providers, employers, healthcare policymakers, and vision care professionals aiming to improve customer satisfaction, retention, and market competitiveness in 2025. With increasing consumer expectations around coverage transparency, digital services, and emerging technologies, the industry must innovate and adapt. Vision benefits that are easily understood, comprehensive, and accessible through in-network providers will define the future of managed vision care.
