Methodology

The Vision Council partnered with Full Circle Research to conduct an online survey of 12,021 U.S. adults between October 1 and December 10, 2024. Soft quotas by age, gender, income, and region ensured national representation based on U.S. Census Bureau data. The overall margin of error is ±0.9% at a 95% confidence level. Data reflect consumer-reported responses, not modeled estimates, allowing for consistent trend comparisons since 2022.

Key Findings

  • 61% of respondents had an eye exam in the past year, holding steady from previous quarters; however, 22% of respondents have gone more than two years without an exam.

  • The majority (86%) of eyeglass purchases occur in person. Of those with an eye exam in the last 3 months who also purchased prescription eyewear, 78% purchased their eyewear from their exam provider.

  • 35% of recent contact lens purchases were made online, down 5% from Q3. Many consumers (51%) are buying smaller supplies lasting three months or less.
