The Vision Council Honors Industry Veteran, George Chao

The Vision Council is honoring the life and work of George Chao, a longtime member of The Vision Council and respected industry leader, who passed away last week at the age of 87 after a long and hard-fought battle with Parkinson’s disease.

“George Chao was a pivotal leader in the optical industry for many decades and he will be missed by many,” said Tibor Gross, Sunglass and Reader Division Liaison at The Vision Council. “We know his impact on the community will continue to be felt and are honored to celebrate his kindness, honesty, hard work and professionalism.”

An essential figure in the vision community, Chao was the founder of Contour Optik Inc. and also served as President of the Taiwan Spectacle Association. Additionally, Chao co-founded the Chiayi Christian Hospital and served as the District Governor of Lions Club in Taiwan.

Chao was devoted to his family, including his wife Shirley and three sons, Richard, Allen and David. He also was a beloved grandfather to seven grandchildren.

A celebration of Chao’s life will be held on October 22 in Chiayi, Taiwan.
