Eyecare practice business rebounded in 2021

For most of 2021, more than 60% of respondents reported that their revenue was normal or better than a typical month. The year was off to a relatively slow start before vaccines were widely available, but after the first quarter, reports of more favorable revenue remained fairly constant. The declines in August and December align with the COVID-19 variant surges.

Practice owners had an optimistic economic outlook

In the first half of 2021, owners were optimistic about business conditions, with more respondents reporting that they anticipate better business conditions than those saying that conditions will remain the same. However, at mid-year, this trend reversed—with fewer owners anticipating better conditions and more owners anticipating about the same conditions. This change likely reflects that business operations had reached typical levels by mid-year and that broader economic conditions had become more stable, so their perceptions of future business conditions were likely optimistic even when if they remained the same.

About half of respondents had a vaccine mandate at their practice

From September through December, respondents were asked if their practice had a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for staff. Most respondents (54%) said their practice did not have any type of vaccine mandate in place.

About a third of respondents said their practice required vaccinations for all staff be vaccinated without exceptions, while 11% of respondents said there was a vaccine mandate but also had a testing option for the unvaccinated.
