Coronavirus Implications

Coronavirus Implications

Overview

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Chinese authorities identified the new coronavirus, which has resulted in thousands of confirmed cases in China, including cases outside Wuhan City. Additional cases have been identified in a growing number of other international locations, including the United States. There are ongoing investigations to learn more. View the CDC fact sheet here.

Shipping & Manufacturing

Shipping companies that carry goods from China to the United States and Canada may be reducing the number of overseas vessels to stop the spread of the coronavirus. In addition, many China factories have kept factories closed and workers at home. Many cities even extended Chinese New Year in an effort to contain the outbreak. Members of The Vision Council should expect delays in shipping & production and should contact their manufacturers, suppliers & freight forwarders to determine the potential impact on their individual businesses.

Travel Restrictions

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to the People's Republic of China (this does not include the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau, or the islands of Taiwan). More information from the CDC regarding travel can be found here.

Optical Retail & Eyecare Providers

In a statement released Jan. 30, the American Optometric Association's Healthy Policy Institute consolidated relevant information on the coronavirus, general public health guidance and infection control protocols that all doctors of optometry should be aware of and actively employ, bearing in mind the evolving nature of the outbreak. Members of The Vision Council can access the AOA's HPI statement here for information relevant to optometric practice.
