The Vision Council Announces Publication of Revised ANSI Z80.3 Standard

Alexandria, VA (April 5, 2018) – The Vision Council, as Secretariat for ANSI ASC Z80, has announced the publication of ANSI Z80.3-2018 – Nonprescription Sunglasses and Fashion Eyewear Requirements. This 2018 revision clarifies testing of photosensitive lenses, making requirements in this standard consistent with international standards.

ASC Z80 is the only entity accredited by ANSI to develop national standards in the ophthalmic optics field. Through its administrator role, The Vision Council demonstrates its dedication to the development of national and international standards that directly affect our industry.

"ANSI Z80.3 establishes standards for noncorrective, 'plano' lenses that are intended for sunglasses and fashion eyewear, and for the flammability and durability of frames and lenses," said Michael C. Vitale, ABOM, The Vision Council Senior Technical Director and Lens Division Liaison. "The revisions to this standard, which were made this year from the previous version published in 2015, have implications for the manufacturers of these types of eyewear – including many of The Vision Council's members."

ANSI Z80.3 specifically excludes products covered by ANSI Z87.1 (industrial safety eyewear), ANSI Z80.1 (corrective prescriptions), and those covered within the ASTM F08.57 committee (products that provide protection for selected sports).
